What we believe.
A child's serious illness affects the whole family. In the middle of fear, exhaustion, and uncertainty, support matters. Small acts of care can make a difficult day feel more manageable. A moment of comfort can restore a sense of dignity. A reminder that someone sees you can make all the difference.
Our mission.
The mission of The Charles J. Mulieri Foundation is to support critically ill children and their families through the PICU Up! Program in ways that bring comfort, care, and moments of normalcy, while hospitalized in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU).
The PICU Up! Program is an innovative, evidenced-based approach developed at Johns Hopkins that combines early rehabilitation support and family engagement to improve outcomes for critically ill children. Children and their family deserve meaningful recovery in order to return to normal life when they leave the hospital. Simply put: survival is not enough.
Why normalcy matters.
When a family is living through a child's medical crisis, life can quickly stop feeling like life. Normal routines disappear. Time feels different. Even small moments of peace or joy can feel out of reach. We believe those moments matter. They do not erase hardship, but they can bring comfort, steadiness, and hope in the middle of it.
How purpose becomes action.
This foundation exists to honor Charlie by supporting children and families facing overwhelming medical hardship, in the very PICU where he spent time.
We are focused on what actually changes outcomes at the bedside — the PICU Up! Program establishes dedicated people, the right tools, and support systems to help families stay present and engaged in their child’s care.
